INTRODUCTION TO MAJLIS
MAJLIS strives to minimise the effects of the many problems facing society today by educating the public on these issues and offering possible solutions. This empowerment results in a cognizant society, sensitive to lingering social problems, moving towards development. For successful seminars, we always seek the participation of many social activists committed to social services.
Additionally, MAJLIS workshops inform participants of new legislation or other important events and policies, and provide resources to guard against, take advantage of, or be further educated about the topic.
Seminars are attended by over a hundred listeners and Workshops and Seminars cover such topics as the empowerment of Gujarat Muslims, the Illegal Detention Act, health and medicine, etc

LAWS AND CITIZENS: RIGHTS AND DUTIES—ILLEGAL DETENTION WORKSHOPS
Illegal detention is a problem most especially found in minority communities. Sons, fathers, citizens of India, are arrested to be “held” for an unspecified period of time. Families are threatened with the risk of more severe action if they complain. This workshop, held on September 17th, 2003 discussed the rights of citizens especially in regard to detention and custody, the seeming anti-minority Gujarati police, and the government’s role in propagating illegal detention and terrorism, the disparity between detained persons’ actions and their detention, and questioned why 239 out of 240 people detained under the POTA act were Muslim. We encouraged constitutional and democratic ways to agitate this prejudice, and informed participants of the legal procedures that must accompany any arrest in order to empower them to defend themselves against improper procedure and illegal detention. Additionally, we provided information on tips to challenge occurrences of illegal detention.
The workshop was led by Honored Justice A P Rawani, the former Chief Justice of Rajasthan; Advocate Girish Patel; Advocate Dr. Mukul Sinha; Advocate Amrish Patel; and Mr. M Hasan Jowher, President of SPRAT.
