287 million adults in India are illiterate.

According to a UNESCO Report, India has the highest number of illiterate adults in the world which constitutes to 37% of the total adult illiteracy in the world. The report also stated that richest young women in India have already achieved universal literacy but the poor will achieve the same only in 2080. The amount of money allocated for primary education is often a waste because of the poor quality of education. Although the literacy rate has risen, but population growth has cancelled out the positive impact and the number of adult illiterates are still the same.
